Across the Story Bridge

Book Week -- 21 to 27 August 2010

From Marden Education Centre Library, South Australia -- We have been celebrating Book Week from the library during term 3. The theme this year is “Across the Story Bridge”. We have organised a variety of activities relating to the theme to celebrate. On 2 September we held a Come In Day for primary students and families at Marden using our new hall. Some of the students came dressed up as their favourite book character and all were involved in activities including, storytelling, mask making, colouring in and model making. SOTA students and those not able to be at the Come In Day have been sent packs of activities to try at home. The library staff have been joining in some classes and talking about books and Book Week and working with students on activities relating to a Book Week title.

book weekFrom Lilydale District School, Tasmania --

Students from Grades 3 and 4 designed their own book spines on large card to promote their favourite book or series.

The spines were then used to form the steps of the 'story bridge' for the shortlisted picture book covers to cross over.

From Scottsdale Primary School, Tasmania -- The students helped me create a collage mural based on the technique used by Stella Danalis - lots of painted newspaper formed the background. We
tried to include 2 things from all the books we had read in library lessons. There was a challenge sheet to match the numbered pictures with the correct titles. We also had a "re-do a shoe" day (inspired by Schumann the Shoeman) - there were some fantastic creations. Some students made model bridges; some wrote stories or poems that involved a bridge in some way; we had an "old library books needing new homes" sale (always very popular!) Lots of other things happening as well. It was great fun.

book weekFrom MLC Libraries, Walton Library, Victoria -- The 2010 Book Week theme of “Across the story bridge” was brought to life in the Walton Library this year with cultural displays from Asia, Australia, Europe, and the USA. The library foyer display set the tone.

The theme has been interpreted as literature in all of its forms as a means of relating to and understanding the cultures of the world. Each geographic display included examples of advertising, bridges, fiction, non-fiction, poetry and cultural artefacts. Students and staff were able to take a tailored guided tour with teacher librarians to highlight aspects of the displays relevant to each year level and class. Different activities were organized from a College staff morning tea celebration with the Literature Club students, an inaugural literary luncheon and poetry slam, Jamaican musician “Jigzie”, author Meme McDonald, Premier’s Reading Challenge student celebration, cultural crafting and Year 12 Media Studies student-produced films with popcorn. Teacher librarians, the librarian, library technicians and audio visual technicians all contributed to ensuring the week was a great success and celebration of literature.

book week Book Week Craft --

Our craft activity for Book Week this year, with the theme in mind, has included the opportunity for the students to make a Russian Babushka doll out of felt and decorated with beads and embroidery and a Kanzushi flower, a traditional Japanese hair ornament, using material and buttons. The flowers can be made into a brooch or a hair clip.
