NT teacher librarian wins Australian Primary Teacher Awad 2011 -- Jo Sherrin, Bradshaw Primary School, NT

Jo Sherrin is a highly accomplished and innovative teacher librarian who consistently creates learning opportunities to meet the diverse learning needs of the Bradshaw Primary School community, of which 50 percent are Indigenous students.

Jo’s outstanding teaching, particularly in foundational literacy skills, is based on sound educational research, a thorough knowledge of her students and the use of cultural and geographical experiences which connect students with their heritage and history and nurture a love of literature and learning. Jo is a founding coordinator of the highly regarded Children’s Literature in the Centre (CLIC) Festival.

Jo’s inspirational contribution to the profession extends well beyond the local community. She is an active leader in the Australian School Library Association in the Northern Territory and is contributing to a trial of the new Australian English Curriculum.

Book Week -- 20 - 26 August 2011 -- Theme: One World, Many Stories

Book Week -- 21 to 27 August 2010 -- Theme: Across the Story Bridge

National Year of Reading 2012 -- Australian libraries and library associations have got together to turn 2012 into the National Year of Reading, linking together all the great things that are already happening around books, reading and literacy, and giving them an extra boost, with inspirational programs and events taking place across the country.

Library Lovers Day -- 14 February. This promotional campaign is a combined advocacy event organised by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) and the Public Libraries Association (PLA).

Information Awareness Month, Library and Information Week, National Simultaneous Storytime -- May. These events are promoted by the Australian Libary and Information Association (ALIA).

International School Library Month -- October. This celebration of school libraries worldwide is organised by the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL).
