Nomination Details

The ASLA Australian Teacher Librarian of the Year Award is the highest award of the Australian School Library Association.  It is a biennial award given at the National Conference.

The ASLA Australian Teacher Librarian of the Year Award will be chosen with respect to achievements and contribution to the school library community.
Members may be nominated by their principal or member of their school community.

Name and contact details of the person nominated for the award must be included in the nomination. The nominee must also be an existing member of ASLA (personal or institutional) and have been for at least the previous three years.

The application must include:

Stage 1
 

  1. A letter of introduction - up to 300 words
  2. A list of qualifications (Evidence of teacher librarian qualification)
  3. A statement of achievements and contribution to the school library community.  (no greater than one page)
  4. A statement to address the following criteria. (about 200 words each).
    Refer to Evidence guides for teacher-librarians  

    Professional Knowledge
    Know students and how they learn 
    Know the content and how to teach it

    Professional Practice
    Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning 
    Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments
    Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning

    Professional Engagement 
    Engage in professional learning 
    Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community

  5. Three written testimonials from Principal, teachers, parents and/or other colleagues including their name, current position within the school/school community and contact details. 

Stage 2

The top three finalists will undergo a personal interview of up to 30 minutes with a panel of judges. Each finalist will be asked the same questions. The interview could be a face-to-face but is more likely to be an online option. 

  • ASLA board members and award project team members are not eligible to apply.
  • Unsuccessful nominees may be re-nominated in subsequent years.

The Teacher Librarian of the Year will be encouraged to attend the biennial conference for the award presentation.
The successful candidate will be required to present a paper at an ASLA conference or write for Access or present a webinar for ASLA.
