Swift Playgrounds App: Everyone Can Code

Date posted: 09 April 2017

Apple has now introduced Swift Playgrounds, a free iPad app designed to teach students how to code and create apps.

With software continuing to play a key role in our world, coding is fast becoming a literacy for students. In Swift Playgrounds, Apple says, “Technology has a language. It's called code. And we believe coding is an essential skill. Learning to code teaches you how to solve problems and work together in creative ways. And it helps you build apps that bring your ideas to life.”

The Swift Playgrounds app allows students to learn basic computer programing concepts like sequencing, logic, and functions through a series of interactive puzzles and real-world examples, such as the steps to tie a shoelace.

Swift has been considered the perfect language to learn coding, as it is intended to be simple yet powerful.

Teachers can familiarise themselves with the app by downloading the Swift Playgrounds Teacher Guide which includes ideas for using commonly used educational apps alongside the teaching of coding with Swift Playgrounds.
