HOPE worldwide (PNG) book donation program

The HOPE worldwide (PNG)/National Library of PNG school library program commenced in 1999 to address the problem that over 70% of schools in PNG did not have any form of a library. The program has three arms:

  • a mobile library vehicle serving schools in Port Moresby without library facilities.
  • an outreach program which establishes new library collections and builds existing collections in schools without adequate library facilities.
  • an information technology program which provides computers and software programs to schools in PNG.

The Australian School Library Association has been a key supporter of HOPE worldwide (PNG) since 2001. At the ASLA XVII Biennial Conference delegates were provided with the opportunity to donate a book to this worthwhile program. Since 2001 ASLA has continued offering this opportunity to conference delegates.

If you are attending the ASLA XX Conference we encourage you to bring along a book / resource donation to this program.

The Book Drive 2007 for the PNG School Library Program is calling for book / resource donations suitable for children, from pre-readers to mid-high school level. The specific areas of need are:

  • All pre-readers
  • All pre-school and young children picture books
  • Non-fiction for children and adolescents -- particularly recent science, geography, nature, environment, culture, history, and how-things-work books. Atlases and globes are also useful.
  • Fiction for children to young teens -- more modern books are preferable to the classics as they are easier to read.
  • All types of dictionaries.
  • Any books on the Pacific and the tropics, particularly PNG.
  • Class readers of any description.
  • Sets of encyclopaedias no more than 25 years old -- Guinness Book of Records.
  • Sporting books, especially athletics, football (all codes), basketball, volleyball, weight-lifting and martial arts.
  • National Geographic, Time-Life books and children oriented magazines.
  • Educational children's videos.
  • Educational CD-ROMs, e.g. World Book / Britannica or other CD-ROMs.

If you require any further information about making a book or resource donation please visit HOPE worldwide (PNG) for the contact details.
