Join award winning author Mark Greenwood and illustrator Frane Lessac as we follow in the footsteps of the greatest escape artist of Australia’s convict era, bushranger Moondyne Joe. We start with his escape from Fremantle Prison, where we will have a Great Escapes tour, followed by morning tea. Then travel up to the scenic Perth Hills, for a view of some wildflower and a visit to the historic Mahogany Inn, one of Joe’s favourite watering holes, where we will have lunch. We will finish the day in the famous Swan Valley at Houghton’s Winery, here we will see the cellar where Joe was finally captured and also taste the wine. Along the route Mark will give background information on his research for the “Legend of Moondyne Joe” his award winning picture book.
Books will be available for purchase and signing during the tour.
Pre-conference tour 2
Award winning school and university libraries. $25 – includes tour and morning tea
Time: 8.15am for 8.30am departure – return 5.00 pm
Venue: Depart from and return to Perth Convention Centre
With everyone on the bus early, we make a prompt departure from the Perth Conference and Exhibition Centre at 8.30am. Our day begins at St Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls in Mosman Park. The Senior School Library, housed in a new Information and Technology Centre, has recently been totally refurbished and was awarded the Council of Educational Facility Planners International, 2008 Educational Facilities Awards for Outstanding School Facilities, Winner of the Renovation/modernisation of School/Major Facility Award. A short bus trip will bring us to St Hilda’s new junior school campus and the opportunity to explore a variety of learning environments and their Junior School Library.
We will then head up the coast to Hale School in Wembley Downs, an independent school for boys, which opened a new senior school library in February 2009. Morning tea will be available in the student café area adjacent to the entrance of the library and participants may simply explore this library and the courtyard it opens into or join a tour and discussion of the Learning Commons concept around which it was designed.
A relaxed lunchtime will allow time to explore Hillarys Boat Harbour, a marina and recreational area offering a wide range of cafes, shops and activities. The Aquarium of Western Australia is here and the AQWA café provides a great view of the harbour from an outside terrace. If you prefer, you may wander the shops, select another cafe, or enjoy take-away sitting on a jetty.
The afternoon brings guided tours of Edith Cowan University’s Joondalup campus Library before we return to the city.
Accompanying Committee Member: Robin Wake.

First stop is the Margaret River Chocolate Factory for morning tea. Next, a short trip down the road to Edgecombe Bros. Winery for a wine tasting on the edge of the vineyard. We then visit the historic church of All Saint’s, Henley Brook, the oldest church in Western Australia. View the old cemetery and maybe take a short stroll to the river. Then on to Sittella Winery for a lunch of gourmet platters. Followed by a stop at Yeltrah Gallery. Last, but not least to Sandalford Winery, Australia's oldest and largest family owned winery. Take this opportunity to see 'behind closed doors’ in Australia’s only monastic town, New Norcia, 132 km north of Perth. Travel by coach through countryside dressed in it’s early spring finery to visit some of New Norcia’s richly decorated buildings, twenty seven of which are listed by the National Trust. Your guide will introduce you to the town’s eclectic monastic, Aboriginal and European heritage. Engage with the most comprehensive display of Yuat indigenous culture in Western Australia and then discover what the European Space Agency is doing at New Norcia. Highlights of the tour include the monks’ private chapel within the monastery and the beautifully frescoed college chapels.
The New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery is home to one of the finest collections of movable heritage in Australia. Upstairs you'll see paintings by Spanish and Italian masters, gifts from the Queen of Spain and a fascinating array of artefacts which tell the story of New Norcia's time as an Aboriginal mission, a centre of the monks' extensive farming activities and as a place of education and culture.
The gift shop offers a range of local produce including New Norcia bread, Nutcake, Pan Choc and olive oil, art, books and music.
On the journey back to Perth you will stop at one of the many wineries for a chance to sample the local ‘drop’ before afternoon tea.
This full day tour includes a morning tea featuring some of the treats for which New Norcia is famous, lunch at the New Norcia Hotel, as well as afternoon tea at a winery.
The tour will return to Perth to arrive around 4.30 pm for participants to attend the Welcome Reception.
