Courses for Teacher Librarianship Offered across Australia

Charles Sturt University - School of Information Studies 

Master of Education (Teacher Librarianship)

This eight subject distance education coursework program in teacher librarianship is recognised by the Australian Library and information Association (ALIA) as a full professional qualification. The course is normally undertaken by part-time study over two years. This period can be extended to four years of part-time study or reduced to one year of full-time study. The course is open to qualified teachers who hold a four year qualification such as a  Bachelor of Education or an undergraduate degree and a Graduate Diploma of Education; or possess other qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the Faculty. Applicants who have a three year teaching qualification and one or more years teaching experience will be considered. The course is provided and supported online and there are no residential schools.

Charles Sturt University - School of Information Studies

Single Subject Study and Open Entry

Single subject study without being enrolled in a course is available. All teacher librarianship subjects can be undertaken this way. Internet access is required.  Subjects can later be credited to a formal course, if desired.

Graduate Certificate of Information Services

The Graduate Certificate in Information Services offers a first award at graduate level for those interested in school librarianship.  It is intended for students who want an introduction to industry best practice and to the knowledge and skills underlying professional information services delivery and management in these areas.

The Graduate Certificate in Information Services is recognised as an exit point from the Graduate Diploma Science (Information Services) and the Master of Information Services.

Graduate Diploma of Science (Information Services)

The Graduate Diploma of Science (Information Services) aims to produce graduates capable of filling senior roles in the information services, information brokerage, information management and knowledge management industries. 

The Graduate Diploma of Science (Information Services) is recognised as an exit point from the Masters of Information Services. 

Edith Cowan University

Master of Information Services

The Master of Information Services aims to produce graduates capable of filling senior roles in the information services, information brokerage, information management and knowledge management industries. 

Students may exit the Master of Information Services after twelve months of full-time study with a Graduate Diploma of Science (Information Services).

Queensland University of Technology 

Master of Education (Teacher-Librarianship)

This course offers a professional teacher-librarianship qualification. It is fully online and incorporates 8 units of study and 60 hours of Situated Professional Practice. Course duration: Full-time -- one year, Part-time -- two years. Entry requirements: An appropriate four-year bachelor degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean or an appropriate three-year bachelor degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean plus at least one year's appropriate professional or industrial experience. Students undertaking the MEd (Teacher-Librarianship) study must be qualified teachers.

Master of Education (Information-Learning Connections)

This course is designed for qualified teacher-librarians, information professionals and educators. It extends conceptual understandings and professional practices for learning and teaching in rapidly changing information-rich learning environments. It is fully online and incorporates 8 units of study. Course duration: Full-time -- one year, Part-time -- two years. Entry requirements: An appropriate four-year bachelor degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean or an appropriate three-year bachelor degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean plus at least one year's appropriate professional or industrial experience.

Graduate certificate in Education (Information-Learning Connections)

This course comprises the 4 core units of the MEd (Information-Learning Connections). It is fully online. Course duration: Full-time – one semester, Part-time -- two semesters. Entry requirements: An appropriate four-year bachelor degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean, OR an appropriate three-year bachelor degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean plus at least one year's appropriate professional or industrial experience.

University of South Australia

Graduate Diploma of Library and Information Management

Entry requirements: A recognised Bachelor degree or equilvalent. If you wish to undertake the teacher librarianship option you must already be a qualified teacher, undertake the specific course that focuses on children's and adolescent literature and complete the in-service project within a school library.

All courses will be available totally online or face-to-face, either part-time or full-time depending on your circumstances, anywhere in the world. The choice is yours. The program is Commwealth Supported which means it is HECS based and application is via Gradstart using the following SATAC code (4GD045). The Program Director will discuss questions related to credit on a one-to-one basis.

University of Tasmania

Graduate Diploma in Information Management 

This on-campus one year full-time or three years part-time course is offered by the Faculty of Commerce.  A three-year degree from an accredited university and basic knowledge of information technology and information modelling is required for entry.
