Steps to Success - Suggested Usage

Video Duration 36 min

The Information Process provides a framework of sequential steps through which learners are able to develop skills and strategies to become information-literate, life-long learners. These are:

  • Defining
  • Locating
  • Selecting
  • Organising
  • Creating and Sharing
  • Evaluating.

This professional development video for teachers and teacher librarians demonstrates, through both a primary and secondary case study, the importance of integrating information literacy and information technology outcomes into curriculum programs.

Suggested usage with teachers. The following session could be used at a staff meeting of teachers. Participants should be seated at tables in groups of 4-6.

Session duration = 1½ hours

Preparation

• Room organised with small tables and chairs. Each table to seat 4-6.

• Photocopy handouts

• Photocopy overhead transparencies and set-up overhead projector and screen. Alternatively a data projector could be used if available (Power point presentation attached)

• Organise white board and pens, Post-it notes

• Ensure order forms of the video are available if appropriate.

  • Introduce self if appropriate
  • Ask participants to consider what they mean by Information Literacy. Ask them to write this in one sentence – use dot points if necessary.
  • Ask participants to introduce themselves to other members of their group, if appropriate, and discuss what they have written.
  • Each table to summarise and contribute to a call-out
  • List ideas on white board

  • Using power point or overhead projector display Christina Doyle’s definition of an information literate person
  • Now display the Information Process overhead and also hand it out to participants (Schools can use local varieties of this, e.g. O/H 2 and H/O 1 is the version used by the Education Department of WA in its Internet in the Curriculum PD Program)
  • Work through the Information Process and examine where Doyle’s dot points fit into the six stages of the Information Process

  • View the video – both primary and secondary segments are suitable to be viewed by teachers at all levels.

  • In groups compile a list of the roles displayed by teachers, teacher librarians, principals and information technology coordinators in this video. Discuss the changing roles of these practitioners. Use H/O 2 to record these roles. If working with a group of teacher librarians think about the future roles suggested by Jamie McKenzie (Access, May 1998, p14-16), i.e. pilots, information mediators, IT managers, curators, as well as the traditional roles of collaborative teacher, learning technology facilitator, information knowledge specialist etc.

  • Examine how your role compares with those in the video
  • Consider what mechanisms are used in the two schools shown in the video to contribute toward achieving an information literate school community. Such things as collaborative planning, assessing process outcomes, team teaching, active involvement of the principal in the educational program of the students, well equipped library, up to date technology, time for program reflection, etc. Use a call out to summarise

  • Suggest ideas to make your school better able to develop information literacy with your students. Suggestions such as time for planning collaborative programs, teacher librarian used as a support teacher, whole school priority for information literacy, etc. These could be written on the larger Post-it notes, grouped and displayed on the white board for future action or school development planning.
