Australian Teacher Librarian of the Year 2017

On behalf of the Australian School Library Association (ASLA), we take great pleasure in congratulating Jane Viner on being the recipient of the Australian Teacher Librarian of the Year Award for 2017.

Throughout her career, Jane has demonstrated the highest levels of commitment and professionalism in her many and varied roles as a teacher librarian. Jane has demonstrated initiative, energy and the drive for excellence in all of the programs, policies and activities she has initiated or been responsible for.

This desire to innovate and embrace change and challenges as both a teacher and a library leader, has enabled Jane to take the lead in areas such as digital learning resources, providing the knowledge and skills necessary to optimise their use amongst staff and students.

In addition, Jane has contributed to her profession through her leadership roles and involvement in professional bodies such as ASLA, ALIA, IBO, IBAP and SLAV and through her publications and presentations at a range of educational forums at a local, national and international level.

Highlights of Jane’s career include her involvement in the IB program focusing on the Extended Essay Research Process at local, state, national and international levels.

Jane has published articles in a range of journals, including Access, FYI and Synergy and will shortly have a chapter: ‘Making a difference to student learning through school libraries’ published in Patrick Lo’s international publication, Effective School Librarianship: Successful Professional Practices from Librarians around the World.

Over her career, Jane has led and managed school library teams of up to thirty staff and has significant multi-campus experience. Jane’s previous awards in recognition of services include an IASL International School Library award and a SLAV John Ward Award. Kilvington Grammar’s McKie Library was nominated for ALIA Great School Libraries in 2015 and was added to the Honours’ list in March 2016. She has recently introduced to Kilvington Grammar a ‘Library Lounge Room’ and the ‘Kilvington Reads Festival’ in May using authors, artists and activities to celebrate literature and reading.

The presentation of this ASLA award is an opportunity for Jane’s peers, colleagues and family to acknowledge her commitment to the profession.

Jane is a worthy recipient of the 2017 Australian Teacher Librarian of the Year award.
