Exploring Non-Fiction: Engaging Young Learners in Information Literacy using Print Texts, with Anna Davidson, Rebecca Lucas, Raffaela Grasso & Michele Rutter ~ ASLA Webinar Series 2025, SeptemberDescriptionIn an increasingly crowded curriculum, the need for strong information literacy and critical thinking skills has never been greater. Teacher librarians play a vital role in guiding students toward relevant, credible sources while supporting educators in integrating current information resources into their classrooms. However, limited instructional time often results in a disconnect between library programs and classroom learning. Additionally, with students increasingly turning to online sources, rich non-fiction collections in school libraries are frequently underutilised.
This session will explore innovative and practical strategies for engaging young learners (ages 3–12) with non-fiction texts, bridging the gap between library and classroom programs. Participants will gain actionable ideas to make non-fiction more dynamic, relevant, and accessible to students, fostering curiosity and critical inquiry.
