Description

Platforms like BookTok and Bookstagram have taken the world by storm and have significantly increased the popularity of books and reading, particularly with teenagers and young adults. You may have overheard your students saying they saw a particular book on TikTok, or you have had students putting in book requests for books they’ve heard about online. This presentation will cover the following topics, followed by a group discussion and brainstorm: • The main social media platforms and how algorithms work. • Content warnings and age recommendations. • How do we as library staff navigate this? How do we encourage age-appropriate reading, without having to resort to censorship? • What are the benefits of these platforms and how to best utilize them? • “Judge a book by its cover” – can you tell if this book is YA or adult just by the cover/blurb? Please note that this presentation is relevant to all school library staff across Australia. This recording is FREE for ASLA Members. You must be logged in for free access.
